Learning an instrument, especially piano, can be a difficult task. With all those chords, music theories and technique, it’s definitely a big challenge to keep all of it in mind. However, these apps can help your journey to learn piano immensely. They often help you in some aspects (but there are some apps that are comprehensive), and they can also track your progress so you know that you’re getting better.

However, not all apps are made the same. So I’ve done most of the legwork and looked for the best among the rest. Here’s a list of the best apps to learn piano for Android:

1. SimplyPiano by JoyTunes

If you’re starting out with learning piano, one of the things that you might need is a skilled piano teacher. If you don’t have that resource, then it’s not the end of the world! SimplyPiano by JoyTunes is just about the next best thing to a piano teacher.

Simply Piano walks you through all the basics like note reading, rhythm and scales. It even lets you play the latest tunes like Ed Sheeran’s Photograph and Katy Perry’s Firework. It works by showing you some notes and walks you through how to play it by listening to your piano. Rather than learning just one aspect of piano, you get the whole package. Personally, it’s the app that made me realize how much of a novice I am in piano because there’s a lot more to be learned.

The caveats? You have to make sure that your piano is tuned, or if you’re using an digital piano, you have to make sure the pitch is correct. Another thing that might turn you away is the fact that beyond the first lesson, you’ll have to pay a monthly subscription. But trust me, you’ll learn more in one month with this app, than you’ll learn in 10 years self studying.

2. Metronome

One of the most important things to a pianist – no, all musicians, is pulse or beat. Aside from foot tapping, a metronome can help you keep track of the beat. However, if you’re going to buy a real metronome, it might turn out to be expensive if you want to get the latest and greatest.

But it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg if you use The Metronome by Soundbrenner. You have a very flexible app at your disposal and it’s absolutely free. That’s right, one of the best apps to learn piano on Android is free to download. You’re not even badgered by ads when you use it. The only thing that they asked you to do is to consider buying their smartwatch slash metronome (which is a really good deal).

Honestly, I’ve got no issues with this app. I really enjoy the fact that you can easily change the time signature and the beats per minute. If you really want to stay in rhythm with your favorite piece, you need this app on your phone.

3. Flowkey

Flowkey is one of the most praised apps to learn piano on the internet. And if you try this app, you’ll know why. It’s essentially a walkthrough to learn how to play pieces. Flowkey cuts out the most gruelling parts of learning piano and makes it an easy and smooth experience for you.

What you get when you download Flowkey is a combination of both sheet music and video. With both things onscreen, you’re not going to get lost with what fingerings to use or how to position your hands. It’s the next level up to just learning from music sheets, and it’s helped me personally in learning some more difficult pieces.

Though Flowkey has a couple of free pieces for you to learn, ultimately, it’s a paid app. You’ll have to pay a monthly subscription to have access to the full library. But once you get over that paywall, you’ve got access to thousands of songs and pieces. If there’s that one piece that you’re dying to learn on piano, you can easily learn it with this app. I’m not doubting the people that say this app is one of the best piano learning apps.

4. Perfect Ear

If you’re aspiring to be a great musician, not just a great pianist, then it’s important to have a good musical ear. In the musical word, the skill to identify and copy music just by hearing it is called aural skill. And if you want to learn aural skills or improve on the aural skills that you have, Perfect Ear is the perfect companion.

Perfect Ear lays everything out like a textbook. You can choose a topic that you want to start with. It can range from intervals to chords to rhythm. Afterwards, you can choose to read on the topic or do some practice exercise to get you warmed up. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you can take exams to measure your proficiency. Perfect Ear gamifies the learning process and it’s a very effective app to learn piano on Android.

The basic courses of Perfect Ear are completely free to you. However, if you’d like to gain access to the advanced courses or you’d like to make quizzes of your own, there’s a one-time payment. I paid for the premium version myself, and I haven’t regretted my decision not one bit.

5. Piano Companion

If there’s an app that can get you from novice to advanced in terms of chords, it’s Piano Companion. This app has a very large collection of chords that you can learn. It shows you the fingerings, the keys to press and the name of the chord. If you’re wondering what a Csus7 flat looks like on a piano, you can find it here.

If you’d like a systematic approach to learning chords on piano, Piano Companion will be your best friend. It lists all chords: Major, minor, 7, diminished, augmented, sustained, inversions and the list goes on and on and on. One of the best features of this app is it can help you create chord progressions. If you’re learning piano with the end goal of making music, then Piano Companion is an invaluable piano learning app.

The only caveat here arises with the chord progression builder. You’ll have to pay a one time fee to have access to the full builder. However, if you’re just using this app to learn all the chords on piano, it’s not that much of an issue. And once you’ve become a master of the chords, playing those pop songs is not going to be difficult at all. It’s easily one of the best apps to learn piano on Android.

6. MuseScore

For the budding musician, looking for sheet music is really difficult and costly. More emphasis on costly because most sites nowadays charge you a fee for just music scores per score. And once you’re at a level that you can read sheet music, it’s going to be a big deterrent to your progress. But with MuseScore, you actually have access to a catalog of free access music sheets.

MuseScore is community driven so you’ll see experts and beginners alike trying to help each other to learn piano. Because there are a lot of people on MuseScore, you’ll see scores from the most basic such as single hands and exercises, to the most advanced like Mozart’s Turkish March or the Flight of the Bumblebee. And all of this content is available to you for free.

The downside? Since almost anyone can upload their own music sheets to the MuseScore library, you’ve got a bit of a quality issue. However, there are some members that are very consistent in the music that they upload and you can subscribe to these musicians. But nevertheless, a free app that gives you access to free scores is what makes MuseScore one of the best apps to learn piano on Android.

7. Ultimate Guitar Tabs

Seeing a guitar app on a list of piano apps might be shocking for you but it’s actually quite logical. Guitar is the most popular instrument and you’ve got a large community continuously pumping out tabs and chord sheets for each new song. However, you’re not going to find it useful not unless you reach the level that you can play chords. But if you already know your way around chords, this is an invaluable resource.

The app itself is more geared towards guitar playing. But to an intermediately skilled pianist, that’s more than enough information to be able to provide accompaniment. I really like the feature that shows you the top 100 tabs, so you can jump right into what everyone else is playing. Aside from always being up to date, the app can also scroll down sheets so you don’t have to take your hands off the piano to continue playing.

The app does sometimes suggest that you sign up to the Pro version, but if you’re just learning piano, it’s not necessary. All in all, it’s a great app to learn piano songs if you’re already familiar with chords.

8. Yousician

Sight reading is one of the essential skills for any musician. Sight reading basically is the skill that lets you translate the notes on the page to your piano quickly and accurately. Personally, it’s one of the skills that I’m aiming to learn right now so I can play music just by having the sheet in front of me. It’s a big challenge and it’s like you’re learning a new language. However, Yousician is one of the apps that has helped me greatly in this endeavour.

Yousician listens to your piano and tells you whether you hit the right note or not. While using Yousician, I felt like I was playing Guitar Hero but on the Piano. And I learned more in a one-hour session that I did with reading sheet music on my own. It’s a great tool for learning piano and it provides you feedback straight away. It tells you your accuracy and your timing, and to a musician, any feedback is appreciated.

The only downside like the other apps on this list, is that there is a monthly subscription to unlock all content. However, if you’re willing to invest money in learning piano, then Yousician is one of the best investments that you can make.

9. Synthesia

If you search YouTube for videos to learn piano, you’ve most likely come across a Synthesia video. Synthesia is one of the most popular piano learning apps on the PC and it has made its way to Android. The concept behind Synthesia is similar to Guitar Hero and other rhythm games where there are falling notes and you have to press the correct key on your piano to get scores.

On Android, Synthesia still has all the features of its PC counterpart and it’s all mobile for you to use. You can even go as far as connecting your keyboard to your phone using MIDI and have Synthesia listen to your keyboard. It’s a great app to learn piano and you can surely pick up a couple of techniques by using this app.

The app does foster some bad habits. For one, you won’t build your skill of reading sheet music. It also does not show you the correct fingering so you might be putting some strain in your hands. Synthesia is still a great tool nonetheless, but you need to research how to play trickier pieces.

Final Words

Best Piano App Android

You’ve seen the best apps on the Google Play Store to date. However, there is no perfect app for learning piano, each has its pros and cons. You can download all of these but if you don’t have the drive to learn and use them, it won’t do you any good. Whichever instrument you’re going to pick up, you always have to have discipline. You need to set aside a certain amount of time per day to learn the instrument. If you do that continuously for a year, you’ll be a virtuoso in no time.

There is a secret to learning piano and becoming a master of it. PRACTICE. Once you’ve done practicing piano, practice it more tomorrow. And then the day after that. It’s a process that goes on for days, months, and years. Some say that for your entire lifetime, you’re practicing the instrument. So, if you really want to learn piano, go sit in your piano bench right now and start playing!
